Who Needs a DOT Physical?
You need a DOT physical if you hold or are applying for a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or if you operate any commercial motor vehicle in interstate commerce. DOT physicals are required every 1–2 years depending on your health status.
You need a DOT physical if you:
Hold a CDL and are due for recertification
Are applying for a CDL for the first time
Drive a bus, truck, or other commercial vehicle for work
Operate a vehicle that transports hazardous materials
Were previously certified and need to renew
*If you have a known health condition (diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea), bring documentation from your treating provider. This can speed up your certification.
Process Overview
What Happens at a DOT Physical
1. Medical History Review
You'll complete an FMCSA medical history form. Be prepared to disclose any current health conditions, medications, and prior surgeries.
2. Physical Examination
Your examiner will assess vision, hearing, blood pressure, cardiovascular function, neurological status, and musculoskeletal health per FMCSA standards.
3. Urinalysis
A urine sample is collected to screen for underlying conditions — not a drug test, but a general health screen.
4. Certification & Documentation
If you meet federal medical standards, you'll receive your Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC) the same day. Results are submitted to the FMCSA National Registry.
